How to Check Image DPI and Print Size
Calculate image print size from pixels and DPI, compare common photo dimensions and understand why changing a DPI label cannot add detail.
Divide pixel width by DPI to get printed width in inches, and do the same for height. A 3,000 × 2,000 image at 300 DPI produces 10 × 6.67 inches before cropping.
The key idea
DPI describes pixel density on paper; it does not create missing detail. Changing a small file to 300 DPI changes the calculated size but not the number of pixels.
Pixels, DPI and inches
The print-size formula is pixels ÷ DPI = inches. A 2400 × 3000 pixel photo at 300 DPI prints at 8 × 10 inches. At 200 DPI, the same file prints at 12 × 15 inches, but each inch contains fewer source pixels.

Changing a DPI label does not add detail
An image may store 72, 96 or 300 DPI as metadata. Editing that number can change the default physical size shown by layout software, but it does not add pixels. A 1200 × 1800 image remains 1200 × 1800 regardless of its DPI label.
Aspect ratio and cropping
A 4 × 6 print has a 2:3 ratio, while an 8 × 10 print has a 4:5 ratio. A typical 2:3 camera image must be cropped to fill 8 × 10 paper. Preview the crop so faces, text and borders remain inside the printable area.
Viewing distance changes the requirement
300 DPI is a useful target for close-viewed photographs, not a universal rule. Large posters seen from farther away can look acceptable at a lower effective resolution. Printer, paper, sharpening and source quality matter too.
