How to Calculate Video Frame Count From Duration and FPS

Calculate total video frames from duration and frame rate, with worked examples for 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50 and 60 fps.

Multiply the video duration in seconds by its frame rate. A 10-second clip at 30 fps contains 300 frames. Keep the exact frame rate when working with 23.976 or 29.97 fps, because rounding it to 24 or 30 changes longer results.

Video frame-count formula

Convert hours and minutes to seconds before multiplying: total seconds = hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds. Then calculate total frames = total seconds × fps. For 2 minutes 30 seconds at 25 fps, use 150 × 25 to get 3,750 frames.

If the duration includes a partial second, retain it in decimal form. A duration of 12.5 seconds at 60 fps contains 750 frames. The finished count must be a whole frame, so software may round a calculated boundary according to its own timeline rules.

23.976 and 29.97 fps need exact values

Labels such as 23.98 and 29.97 describe fractional rates used in common video workflows. The exact rates are often 24,000/1,001 and 30,000/1,001. Over a few seconds the difference looks small; across a long recording, substituting an integer rate produces a growing mismatch.

Frame rate and timecode display are related but not identical. Drop-frame timecode skips selected frame numbers to keep the displayed clock close to real time; it does not remove video frames. Confirm the project’s actual frame rate and timecode convention before reconciling an editor, caption file or production log.

Checks before using the result

Read the duration from the same source that defines the frame rate. Variable-frame-rate phone recordings may not behave like a fixed-rate timeline, and a player’s rounded duration can differ from the media stream. For an exact editing decision, inspect the file in the destination editor.
