4×6 Photo Size in Pixels at 300 DPI (and Other Resolutions)

A 4×6-inch print needs 1200×1800 pixels at 300 DPI. The multiplication is simple, but orientation, aspect ratio and the printer’s requested resolution can still change the file you should prepare.

To convert inches to pixels, multiply each print dimension by the target DPI: 4 × 300 = 1200 pixels and 6 × 300 = 1800 pixels. A portrait file is therefore 1200 pixels wide by 1800 pixels high; a landscape file is 1800 by 1200.

These figures describe pixel dimensions, not a guarantee of print quality. Focus, noise, heavy compression and previous upscaling can make a large file look poor. Conversely, a clean image printed at a slightly lower resolution may still look entirely acceptable at normal viewing distance.

How to calculate print pixels from DPI

The formula is inches × dots per inch = pixels. In everyday image preparation, DPI is often used as shorthand for pixels per inch, even though printer dots and image pixels are technically different measurements. The file lab’s requested specification is the one that matters.

Why a 4×6 print may crop your image

A 4×6 photo has a 2:3 aspect ratio. Many phone and camera images use a different ratio, such as 4:3. When the shapes do not match, the printing service must either crop part of the image or leave borders. Stretching should be avoided because it changes the proportions of faces and objects.

Use the aspect ratio calculator to compare the source shape with 2:3. Then crop deliberately, keeping important faces and text away from the outer edge. Some printers trim a small amount beyond the nominal boundary, so do not place critical details directly against the border.

How to check whether your image is large enough

  1. Find the image’s pixel width and height in its properties or use the image megapixel calculator.
  2. Compare the shorter side with 1200 pixels and the longer side with 1800 pixels for a 300 DPI 4×6 target.
  3. Check that the image has a 2:3 ratio or crop it to that shape.
  4. Inspect the file at 100% zoom for blur, compression blocks and missed focus.
  5. Follow the print provider’s instructions for color space, format and upload size.

If the file is larger than required, resizing a copy can make uploading faster. If it is smaller, increasing the pixel count does not create missing detail. Upscaling may soften obvious pixel edges, but it cannot turn an out-of-focus or tiny source into a genuinely detailed photograph.
